Woodlands Jam
What a day! Great vibe, atmosphere and an awesome sound system, along with a lovely little BBQ run by Tom Hatwell and the Boylo. The sausages could have been better but overall the day went brilliantly. I only feel for Jam who couldn't get out until everyone was packing up, poor lad!
The day kicked off around lunchtime after the sound system was set up and as I walked up after a run I was surprised to see about 20 cars lining the fireroad (before there had been about 5)! Nick wacked the laptop onto random and the tunes kept on coming, inspiring the riders to go bigger and faster than they ever had done! The dusty conditions meant that the corkscrew was near suicide and clouds of dust behind the riders made for some good photo opportunities for the hoards of cameras.
It was good to see people that had not come out for a while and some of our newer members were ripping up the tracks (Francis and Issac and also the guy on the Amoeba hardtail were all looking very nice). Some of the more veteran members were also out, Tom Lemon showed up in his bright green Smart car to watch after his accident on the corkscrew and Jim came out on his hardtail after his broken hip incident on the er... corkscrew (there's something about that track).
Talking about accidents, there was no shortage of carnage on the day. Jon Credy decided to take a leap of faith of the Big Biscuit minus his bike and ended up smashing his shoulder (fortunately for him the damage wasn't too bad and no bones were broken, the same can't be said for his Foes DENT!!!). Alex Evans payed another visit to Derriford, this time slightly less serious than his split liver/intestine jobby with a gashed knee and 6 stitches. Mr Mundane also decided to eat ground, going down on the rock drop berm and Richard's rock section! Richard came off on Kris' track and Franny rouned off the carnage with a sum total of 4 crashes throughout the day!
"Magic Place" was Derek's reaction to the action and Nathaniel Stevens decided to WOW us all with some HUGE no footers and whips off the gorse jump and the top doubles (that boy will go far...)!
Bring on next summer!

Maxxis British Motocross Championships Round 4 at Landrake
Sunday saw some of the world's most talented motocross riders head down to Landrake near Saltash for Round 4 of the Maxxis British Motocross Championships, a day's worth of truly spectacular racing on a perfect course meant that entertainment levels were high for everyone spectating and riding.
Racing started at around midday after the qualifying and practise got the riders warmed up and used to the track, the conditions were a little muddy in the morning but the sun came out and the temperatures rose, drying up the track gradually as the day went on, making the endless ruts in the corners and some of the take offs dry out solid.
When practise and qualifying had finished, there was a chance for fans to get autographs from their favourite riders and posters signed. This was a great idea and one which I think should be brought into Downhill racing for the Nationals and World Cups, it's great for the fans and gives them an opportunity to speak to the riders and in me and Milky's case, get a few cheeky interviews from Carl Nunn and Ken De Dyker, both leading championships in the MX2 and MX1 classes respectively.
A special mention must be given to Jasper Flashman who, on his first practise lap came up to the 60ft tabletop and found his throttle had jammed open... as he skyed the tabletop the bike came away from him and he ended up landing from about 50ft in the air to flat on his feet right next to the commentator and most of the crowds at that point. Luckily, although he went to hospital coughing up blood, no serious damage was done and we even saw him in the evening, chilling in his van!
The day's racing started at about 12 with the MX2 class, Carl Nunn easily won it in the quickly drying conditions. The MX1 class kicked off shortly afterwards and series leader, Ken De Dyker took the win with a storming race. The second MX2 race was again won by Nunn and after the leader in the first two laps snapped his chain Ken De Dyker also won his second race of the day in the MX1 class.
The day was finished off with a huge Nac Nac by De Dyker on the big tabletop and the crowds began to disperse o the carpark and the huge quewes to get out. Kris took the sensible and economic approach and we all sat in the car until everyone had left.
A great day out and definitely worth the £20 to get in, I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in any type of two wheeled racing, wether it be mountina biking or motocross.

Abercarn Dragon Round 4
What a great Sunday! Me and Milky headed up early on Sunday (5:30am) to Abercarn in South Wales for the fourth round of the Dragon Series organised by Jason Carpenter, organisation was spot on and the track was nothing less than AMAZING!
As we neared the car park and the finish area at 8:00am we could see the uplift trucks already running and as we scrambled out of the car in order to go and walk the track we noticed Rich and Kenny already walking up to the uplift for another practice run; the verdict was “greasy”…
The rain had come in over night and soaked the track nicely so the morning practice saw some people caught off guard on the slippery roots and sketchy off camber sections, as we walked up the track we could see some riders crawling down, weary of the difficult conditions and some guys just hammering it regardless of the lack of grip that there was. As we reached the long off camber right hander we saw one guy two wheel drift all the way to the bottom at stupid speeds with his leg out. This was the point at which the thought: ‘I’m going to die’ came into my head and looking at the expression on Milky’s face I wasn’t alone! As we reached the top of the track we found the rock section and bus stop in relatively dry condition so we walked back down the hill to the bikes to get some practice in.
The uplift queue was quite long at the start of the day which was a bit annoying and one of the only slip ups for the weekend, the new system meant that the trucks could only be filled with 30 riders sat on hay bails with the bikes stacked carefully at the front of the truck. As the practice wore on the queues got smaller and in the end the new system was all in all: comfier, less damaging to your bike and safer.
For me and Milky there was only time for 2 practice runs and on both occasions we decided to train it down together in order to try and push ourselves to ride faster and learn the track from each other’s lines. We managed to get to the bottom fine with out any major dramas and so we were both confident about our race runs (I was beginning to feel slightly nervous of how well Milky was riding).
Race runs started dead on time at 11:30 with the hardtail category and were very precise all day right up to the elite’s 2nd runs at the end of the day. Conditions were becoming dryer quickly and riders were beginning to hit everything that bit faster in the grippy conditions. I got down my first run with an OTB moment and got a 2:34, really disappointing considering my run was going ok until the crash, I found Milky and he hadn’t crashed… and got a 2:32! Damn! Now that Milky was beating me I knew he wouldn’t relax in the 2nd runs and so I was determined to put a lightning quick time in.
After psyching myself up and telling myself over and over how annoyed I would be if Milky beat me I still crashed twice in my second run and gave up, I knew he had beaten me by then and I was so annoyed with myself I rode down the fire road to the finish. Again I found Milky and he told me he had taken 3 seconds off his first run time to make a 2:29, nice one!
Jokes aside, Milky rode well on Sunday and well done to him for kicking my ass by 5 seconds but we’ll see about next round, it’s not going to happen again! The Dartmoor Cycles team did pretty well, Rich Bedford came in with a 2:07, Kenny Edwards with a 2:11 and Kris Rogers raced the Saturday and got a 2:09, well done guys!
After a great race and one of the best tracks I have ridden I’m looking forward to the next Dragon I end up going to, hopefully I will be able to concentrate on riding more next time (anyone want to do some filming?!), the organisation was spot on and the experts and elites put in some stunning times; Dan Stanbridge got a 1:48 on the Sunday winning the weekend overall and both rounds separately. Our course designer for Gawton Woods, Rowan Sorrel came second with a 1:52 and third went to Stu Thompson with a 1:52 also. A mention must be given to Ben Cathro in the Junior category who posted the second fastest time of the day with a 1:51!
Cheers to Jason for organising a great weekend and I will most definitely be back next time to turn the tables back round again (be afraid Milky, be very afraid!).

06/11/05 Winter riding is now here wether we like it or not, the weekend has turned from a nice relaxing, dry and peaceful riding atmosphere where no-one can be bothered to do anything, into a muddy, wet, slippery challenging day where weirdly enough, more riding gets done! Anyway, winter also brings the start of a new film, me and Milky have started filming for 'Relativity' and the first signs are definitely good for this new film. We are hopefully going up to some NPS rounds next year to get some racing action from the top riders in the sport. There will also be a tasty selection of road racing (um... yeah not really)! Anyway, if your down Woodlands sometime soon, or if your racing in the Winter Series or any NPS rounds in the next year, make sure you get your ugly mug in the film!
24/10/05 The new Woodland Riders OFFICIAL website is now up and running, check out www.woodlandriders.com and have a blast! Um, its still under construction though, so it probably won't be very fun but there is the forum! Oh and the new newsletter will be sent out shortly...
25/09/05 Just been out at Woodlands and By Jove Jam is getting quick, he's already overtaken Mr Chapple and he's only been riding his old Clubroost for 2 weeks. Just goes to show that you don't have to have a top of the range bike to go quick, just skill and commitment..... That was the most beautiful thing I've ever said..
26/07/05 Nathan headed up to the Race Face DH series this weekend and did the site proud by coming 5th in Youth category with a stonking time of 1:35:361. Brilliant time mate. Kenny Edwards (Dartmoor Cycles), ex- team rider for SWDH came 4th in Sport Male with a time of 1:38:761.
Milky on the real boobies course
Rugby Club Woods
What do you do on a Bank Holiday Monday when you have exams coming up and it's a lovely sunny day? Well obviously you go riding! A bunch of us burned it up to the Rugby Club after a failed trip to Crowndale Woods and had a hell of a day blasting down the short, steep tracks in the slidey conditions.
The crew consisted of Me, Milky, Kenny, Jam, Alex, Ali and two up and coming riders: Ash and Alex. The tracks were drifty as hell when we got there and the corners were great fun as it was like cornering on ice, catching Kenny out on the corner onto the fireroad off Milky's track who went OTB down the hill! The last corner saw some full on two wheel action as everyone tried to hit it quicker and quicker and ended up sideways round it, I myself nearly high sided a couple of times after trying to hit it at warp speed off the jump!
After we got a little bored of Milky's track we decided to build a completely new course; "The real boobies course" is basically one of camber, no chance in hell of staying gripped corner after another, finishing off with two corners and incorporating the infamous final corner as the finish!
What a great day, hanging out with mates in the sun and building stonking new courses, see you up there some time!
Pictures from the day can be found on my Pinkbike album!
